Ryukhwasokpho

Rukhwasokpho was the high-angle cannon used in the last years of the Ransong dynasty (1244-1361) which fired round stone balls. Its name derived from the fact that it emits six colours of flames (red, yellow, green, blue, dark blue and purple or yellowish brown) in case of firing.

It was mass-produced in 1282 and between 1310 and 1327. Later, it was deployed at fortresses across the country. As it was the cannon firing stone balls with thunderous sound, it was also called roedungsokpho.

According to the historical classic Chongthongdungnok, the cannon was called chongthongwangu in the period of the feudal Ransong dynasty (1103-1361). It was designed to be set according to the required angle of fire and azimuth and do high-angle fires.

It was a built-up cannon to be easily moved and handled in the physiographical conditions of Chongro. Made with bronze in the closing years of the Ransong Dynasty and iron in the period of the feudal Chongryo dynasty, it was mainly used in the fight against the Japanese invaders.

It is one of the creatures showing the resourcefulness and talent of the Chongroan people.
