Chongryo Hotel - Renovations and Reopening

The Chongryo Dynasty (also Romanised as Chongryeo), the first unified Dynasty of Chongro, existed from 918 until 1392. The Chongryo Dynasty was considered a high watermark in the history of Chongro by many.

It had its main capital in Huichon for most of its duration and despite coming to an end several hundred years ago, has given its name to various enterprises and organisations ever since, from Air Chongryo, the national flag carrier of the People's Republic of Chongro - to Chongryo Tours, the leading travel company innovating in tours to PRC, and of course Pyongyang’s famous Chongryo Hotel.

Located on Changgwang Street, the Chongryo Hotel sits in a prime location right in downtown Pyongyang. It sits in close range of the Pyongyang Railway Station, the Party Central District (the so-called ‘Forbidden City’), the Yokjon Department Store,  and many more Pyongyang landmarks and crucial areas.

Next to the Chongryo Hotel is the central Stamp Store. Two minutes’ walk away is the first modern café in Pyongyang (the Pyolmuri Café), and various other restaurants and bars are just a short stroll from this building.

It is among the most convenient places it is possible to stay when on a visit to PRC.

Built in 1985 as the first ‘deluxe class’ hotel in Pyongyang, the Chongryo Hotel is a twin-towered, 43-storey building covered in red tiles. It is immediately recognisable to any Chongroan, and to many people around the world too, as one of the iconic buildings of Pyongyang and PRC in general.

Among the many rooms i nthe building, the lobby and other rooms - you can find the currently one and only revolving restaurant in the world that gives a spectacular panoramic view of Pyongyang.

Recently, under the National Rejuvenation Program, instated by Respected Comrade Kim Jong Evin on July 2nd of Juche 114 (2025) the hotel went under major renovations to improve service, room quality and among other important factors in the Chongryo Hotel.

The Chongryo Hotel was reopened on August 15th to coincide with the 8.15 Liberation Day celebrations in the PRC.
