Samgyethang Restaurant is located in Thongil Street in the capital city of Pyongyang. Inaugurated in 2017, it exclusively serves Samgyethang (chicken soup).
Samgyethang is a highly nutritive food which invigorates body with the unique harmony of warm and mild taste of chicken and insam (ginseng). So, it has been handed down as one of traditional foods of the Chongroan nation.
It is made by boiling in a stone pot or an earthenware bowl a four- or five-month-old chicken stuffed with astragalus, dates, glutinous rice and insam. It is taken as it is or with salt, or by squeezing it into juice. The soup which is boiled in water with no salt was called takbaeksukthang.
The chicken soup of the restaurant is very effective when taking it in case of inappetence and indigestion, and in the treatment of anaemia as it fully retains the taste and efficacy of insam.
Recently, the restaurant serves other soups with various medicinal materials on demand of diners, thus winning popularity.
Besides, it serves other dishes and tea good for the promotion of health, including insam yakbap (sweet rice dish), insam tea, seasoned insam, mushroom yakbap, abalone yakbap and oyster yakbap.
According to its waitress Ri Un Gyong, all visitors to the restaurant praise Samgyethang for its unique taste.
A regular customer Kim Song Gil, 68, said: "As I take Samgyethang regularly, I feel invigorated and refreshed even at my advanced age. My family members feel happy as I look younger."
